The Woodlands and Lake have dominated The Trentham Estate for over 200
years.
The Lake was enlarged to its current size, over 1 mile in length, between 1759 and 1780 by the famous landscape designer, Capability Brown, on behalf of the estate’s owner, The Duke of Sutherland.
It is home to a variety of water fowl, swans and also a number of herons who have a colony on the lake. It is also a reminder of the great English estates of the eighteenth century, with the mature woodlands fringing the western shore.
Enjoy the tranquillity of 750 acres of free park and woodland. There are 5
free walks, from an easy stroll around the 1 mile long lake to the
Lakeside Café to a more strenuous climb up to the monument at the south
end of the estate.
All the walks are clearly signposted and we highlight the areas that may be of particular interest to you, to ensure you don’t miss a thing.
There are also two places for you to stop for refreshment whilst enjoying the fantastic views of the woodland, the brand new Boathouse Café at the northern end of the lake, and the Lakeside Café at the southern end, both are open every day for drinks and light refreshment.
In addition, there are three great ways to discover the Trentham Woodlands and Lake. You can take a gentle cruise on Miss Elizabeth, take to the lake on your own rowing boat, or enjoy a journey along the side of the lake on our miniature railway, the Fern. For more information click here .
