School Groups
Supported School Activity
The Trentham Discovery Programme for schools is delivered along themed strands, which relate to activities studied within the classroom environment, therefore supporting teachers in their delivery of the National Curriculum and adding real value to pupils learning experiences.
The school has the opportunity to choose from a range of options including pond dipping, the woodland trail, bird spotting, tracks and animal marks, arts and photography and bird food mobiles which would be delivered with the support of the Education Officer. The supported sessions are one and a half hours long and would be complimented with a range of non-supported activities such as Barfuss and the Woodland Trails, which would comfortably provide an additional one and a half hours of activity within the garden.
Option 1. Mini Raft Building.
This is a one and a half hour workshop session which involves collecting the materials to build the rafts from the gardens and environment. This is an opportunity to discuss the seasons, lifecycles and / or regeneration of the woodland environment. The second section of the session will be the construction of the mini rafts where the class can be introduced to examples of traditional boat building such as the coracle or Egyptian barques. The workshop finishes with a mini raft race down the river between the two bridges at Trentham.
Option 2. Bird Feeder Mobiles.
This is a one and a half hour workshop session, which begins with collecting the materials to build the mobiles from the gardens and woodland environment. This is an opportunity to discuss the seasons, lifecycles and / or regeneration of the woodland environment and to listen for birdsong. The second stage of the session will be the construction of the bird feeder mobiles where the class can use elements of their classroom work around balance and weights. Elements of Design Technology can also be introduced with the use of various construction techniques and materials. The schools can take the mobiles back to school to hang in the grounds and observe the birds as they come to feed.
Option 3. Bugs and Beasties.
This workshop is based in the woodland area and lasts for one and a half hours. The class will collect bugs, beetles, worms and insects using collecting jars and nets. This gives an opportunity to discuss the seasons, lifecycles, food chains and regeneration of the woodland environment whilst searching for and identifying the insect life living in the woodland or in the ponds. An additional element of this workshop is the opportunity to draw the ‘bugs and beasties’ and photograph the areas where the insects live to take back to the classroom to continue with work at school.
